In this section you can learn more about the weather and climatic features of the Costa Rican territory.

This beautiful country is made up of many different climatic zones, which also creates a lot of microclimates within it. There is no real winter season, and it is classified as a tropical country due to how close it is to the equator.

There are only two seasons in Costa Rica and they are called the dry season and the rainy season.

The country’s best climate is said to be in the central valley of San Jose, temperatures generally average 72° Fahrenheit (22° Celsius). In what is known as the highlands, the average temperature is 55° Fahrenheit (13° Celsius).

It includes the largest urban centers in the country: San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago.

It includes life zones from tropical rainforest to premontane rainforest. Some areas have tropical rainforest with average temperatures of 22 C and annual rainfall of 2300 mm on average.

It is characteristic of this region the humid tropical forest, rich in exuberant vegetation. Its plains are used mainly for the cultivation of bananas.

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, like other parts of the country, has its own microclimate. It rains quite often and there is no real rainy season.

 

It belongs to the Caribbean rainfall regime, which is rainy all year round, with a relative decrease in February, March and April. 

It has areas of humid tropical forest and transition to dry forest.

It is an area of extensive coastal zone, tropical forests, tropical dry and wetlands.

The dry period runs from December to March, with rainfall of 4% total annual rainfall. April is a month of transition and in May the rains are established until August (50% of annual rains).

Located in the central part of the Pacific slope of Costa Rica, its climate is tropical with short and moderate dry season, but has a very severe and long rainy period to the south. The average maximum temperature is 31 C and the minimum is 22.7 C.

Corcovado National Park is one of the richest biological areas in Latin America. It has a peninsular platform and therefore has tropical rainforest redoubts, with great biodiversity.

Its average maximum temperature is 27.9 C and the minimum is 20.5 C. The dry period runs from January to March and its first rainy period between May and August.
